I originally bought a pair of these Contigo travel mugs, about two years ago, and I was overwhelmingly pleased with the product. After more than two years of hard service, each white pull tab broke at the hinge, in turn, and it was finally time for a replacement. Fair enough...
So with very high hopes I purchased a replacement, this product you now see here. It is arguably the "same" as before, only with some "new and improved" attributes. Nobody seems to leave well enough alone. At least compared with the earlier edition, this product now comes with several cost saving features that detract from its value.
But first a few positives. Let me say right out that this travel mug holds heat/cold very effectively. I have no complaints here. In fact it seems to be genuinely improved over the earlier generation, at least in this one regard. Add one star. And while looks can be subjective, I personally think these are very attractive mugs. The smoke black option practically says testosterone right on it, and the rich blue and deep pink color options are also very appealing, with handsome black trim in all cases. Add a half star. The nonskid bottom is also a nice feature, and ultimately a very useful one as well. Add another half star. And the tag that comes with the mug advertises it as a BPA free product with stainless liner. I like that. One more star.
But now some of the bad news (in other words, no more stars) ...
1. The reason I bought another one of these in the first place is because the pull tab on both my originals broke. The white pull tab is very weak right at the neck where it meets the metal pivot pin. Of course this is where the stress occurs, and no surprise that's where it eventually breaks. But the new mug has a redesigned pull tab. And go figure, it is significantly less robust at this very spot. It should have been improved (!) No star.
2. The new pull tab design might be more ergonomically designed, maybe depending on your preference, but it is certainly much less appealing. It looks and feels cheap. And that's because it is.
3. The new flip lid no longer has any tactile "bump" feel when it is pressed down. It is not obvious whether or not you've made that all important seal. (But it does seem to seal ok, so far as I can tell...). The business end of the tab has a small rubber stopper which seems effective to make seal with the spout opening. The older version had a rubber ring around the inside of the spout which was equally effective. Why the change? I don't know. Now it is hard to tell whether you've effectively closed it. So I keep pressing down, hoping, pressing, hoping, and then I lug it around with significantly less confidence than I did before. No star.
4. The new spout is about half the size as before, and there is no vent hole to assist with pouring. Previously there was a vent at the top underside of the pull tab. It closed off when the tab was down, and when open it helped your favorite beverage pour out much easier. It was perfect. Now there is no vent. And with the half sized spout, it can be really difficult to pour. Bad design. So you guessed it, no star.
Overall, when compared side by side with the earlier version of this same product, it is objectively lower quality than before. It looks cheaper. It feels cheaper. But it does not cost cheaper. And this is typical of what we find more and more in so many of our products. It's really too bad. It was a previously very good product.
I will not purchase the product again, and I would not recommend it highly to others. I really wanted to like it. But now I'd really be luke warm at best, and more likely I'd say look elsewhere... Maybe manufacturers will someday get our message that quality is not necessarily a bad thing.

After losing my 3rd Contigo travel mug, I was relieved to find it on Amazon after some searching.I truly loved that mug! However, this is not the same quality as mugs past. It feels lighter and the lid is different. I find that I get to wear my coffee now as it tends to leak, as was not my past experience. Woe is me, I thought the perfect mug was found, but now it is lost....

The good: it keeps drinks at temperature for a long time. An iced coffee in this mug will still have intact ice cubes several hours later. The capacity is good, and unlike some other people I actually like the caribineer handle, I use this feature a lot when the mug is empty to clip it to the outside of my messenger bag. The bottom is rubbery so it doesn't skid, and I like the rubbery grip in the middle of the mug (I also have this mug in a version without a handle).
The bad: The seal at the top (where the black plastic meets the metal) is not watertight. Water has gotten into the walls of the mug. I know this because after I wash the mug, I will dry it, then invert it right-side up again, and light brown coffee-water will dribble back down into the mug. I have two of these (got them as a gift) so I think this is a design flaw and not just a lemon. This is concerning in terms of what's possibly growing in the mug walls.
The verdict: these are my backup mugs when my preferred mugs are dirty. Too bad, because the temperature-keeping properties of this mug are great.
